  The Exposure Assessment (EA) Committee met for the first time on June 14-15 in Bethesda. EA Committee members present were Richard Dalby, Ph.D., Karl Fagerström, Ph.D., Jerold Last, Ph.D., Robert Orth, Ph.D., and William Waddell, M.D. Members of the Core Committee in attendance were Louis Homer, M.D., Ph.D. and Elizabeth Anderson, Ph.D. LSRO staff members Michael Falk, Ph.D., Kara Lewis, Ph.D., Catherine St. Hilaire, Ph.D., Daniel Byrd, Ph.D., and Carmen Mones, B.A. attended the meeting and Amy Brownawell, Ph.D., Paula Nixon, Ph.D. and Keith Lenghaus, Ph.D. were present for a brief portion of the meeting. Maria Varga, M.D. (Star Scientific) attended the Information Gathering Session on the morning of June 14th.

The EA Committee discussed the scope of work of the Exposure Assessment Committee, and Amy Brownawell and Keith Lenghaus briefly summarized the scopes of work for the Biological Effects Assessment (BEA) Committee and the Population Effects and Behavior Assessment (PEBA) Committee, respectively. Paula Nixon discussed tobacco toxicants in smoke. Dr. Robert Orth made a presentation entitled Tobacco Products and the Chemistry of Use: Smoked Tobacco and Smokeless Tobacco, and Dr. Louis Homer offered remarks on the subject of filter cigarettes.

The committee discussed cigarette smoking machine testing protocols, smoking topography, smoke analytes and biomarkers of exposure to tobacco products and tobacco smoke. The next meeting of the EA committee will take place September 22-23, 2005 on the FASEB campus, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD and will focus on biomarkers of exposure and clinical study design for evaluating potential reduced-risk products. An information-gathering session that is open to the public will take place on the morning of September 22nd.
