the Nutritional Needs
of Infants Worldwide The Life Sciences Research Office, Inc. (LSRO) provided support to prepare written summaries of presentations from the conference entitled "Advances in Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Infants Worldwide." The conference and summary report are sponsored by The International Formula Council (IFC), 1200 Lake Hearn, Drive, Suite 500, Atlanta, Georgia 30319 in accordance with a contract between LSRO and the IFC. Presentations invited by IFC, were made on April 5, 2006 at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco, CA during the American Society for Nutrition's annual meeting at Experimental Biology. The expert speakers and the titles of their presentations are identified in the agenda.
The purpose of the conference was to review the progress that has been made in provision of safe and adequate nutrition of infants since adoption of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes by the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization in 1981.
Papers from this conference were submitted to the Journal of Nutrition for publication as a supplement in an upcoming issue in early 2007. The intent of these presentations was to review selected aspects of the topics, not to be all-inclusive. In his paper, Dr. William Heird summarizes the progress that has been made over the past twenty-five years in promoting breastfeeding, combating malnutrition, and improving the composition of infant formula. The second paper, by Lene Schack-Nielsen and Dr. Kim Michaelsen, presents a comprehensive update of the effects of human milk and breastfeeding on the offspring. The third paper, by Dr. Nancy Krebs, reviews some of the principal nutritional issues for complementary feeding with a focus on zinc status. The fourth paper, by Dr. Bernadette Marriott, describes infant feeding practices in the first year of life in developing countries. The final paper, by Dr. John Beard, presents recent evidence from human and animal studies of the importance of iron status in infant development.
