of Infants Worldwide Expert Speakers John L. Beard, Ph.D., received a B.S. in organic chemistry from the Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ), an M.S. in physical organic chemistry from the University of California (Santa Cruz), and a Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). Dr. Beard joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University (University Park) in 1984, where he currently serves as Professor of Nutritional Sciences. His research interests include the effect of early life iron deficiency on brain development and functioning and the relationship of brain iron to Restless Legs Syndrome. He chaired the U.K. Food Standards Review Committee on Iron Nutrition (2003) and was a member of the Steering Committee for the International Nutrition Anemia Consultative Group (1999-2003). Dr. Beard served on the Micronutrient Panel for the Recommended Dietary Allowances committee in 1993 and on the panel for Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for the Institute of Medicine, Food and Nutrition Board (2003) and continues to hold advisory board positions for the Iron Disorders Institute and the Board for Research Advancing Iron in Neurology. Since 1999, he has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Nutrition.
William C. Heird, M.D. received a B.S. in chemistry from Maryville College (TN) and a M.S. in pharmacology as well as a M.D. from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). He completed an internship in Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a residency in Pediatrics at Babies Hospital (Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center). Following 2 years in the U.S.A.F. Medical Corps, he returned to New York for postdoctoral training and accepted a faculty position in the Department of Pediatrics, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Since 1990, he has held an appointment as Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Children's Nutrition Research Center (Houston, TX). His research interests include the nutritional requirements for optimal growth and development of term and preterm infants. Dr. Heird received the Nutrition Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1994 and was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition in 2004. He is past Chair, Board of Directors of the Life Sciences Research Office, Inc. (Bethesda, MD). He is a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and reviews regularly for a number of other journals. He is an ad hoc reviewer for the National Institutes of Health as well as other funding agencies.
Nancy F. Krebs, M.D., received a B.S. with honors from Iowa State University (Ames), a M.S. in human nutrition from the University of Maryland (College Park) and an M.D. with honors from the University of Colorado School of Medicine (Denver). She completed a residency in pediatrics and a three-year fellowship leading to board certification in both Pediatric Clinical Nutrition and Pediatric Gastroenterology. Dr. Krebs is currently a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Since 1993, she has served as the medical director for the Department of Coordinated Nutrition Services at The Children's Hospitals. Her research interests include zinc and trace mineral nutrition in normal infants (especially breastfed infants), premature infants, and pregnant and lactating women. Dr. Krebs is past-Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition (2001-2005) and currently co-chairs its Task force on Obesity. Dr. Krebs is on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.
Bernadette M. Marriott, Ph.D., received a B.S. in biology from Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA) and a Ph.D. in psychology from King’s College, University of Aberdeen (Scotland). Dr. Marriott is currently Vice President for Science Integration, Social and Statistical Sciences at RTI International (Research Triangle Park, NC). Formerly she held positions of Director, Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD), Vice President, Programs and Communications at the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (Research Triangle Park, NC), and Deputy and then Interim Director, Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine (IOM). She was appointed by the IOM as a special consultant to work with the committee to write and edit the 2003 report, Dietary Reference Intakes, Guiding Principles for Nutrition Labeling and Fortification. She has served as a reviewer for many IOM reports. Dr. Marriott is a member of numerous professional organizations and currently chairs the Public Policy Committee of the American Society for Nutrition.
Kim Fleischer Michaelsen, M.D., received a M.D. from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and is a doctor of medical sciences. He is a professor of pediatric nutrition in the Department of Human Nutrition, the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University and is a pediatrician and Senior Consultant with the Pediatric Nutrition Unit at Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen, Denmark). His research focuses on nutrition, growth, and development of infants and young children, particularly the effects of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, probiotics, cow's milk, and micronutrient supplementation. Dr. Michaelsen serves as an advisor on pediatric nutrition to the Danish Health Agency and has been an ad-hoc advisor to the World Health Organization on several occasions. He is past president of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation, and was an active member of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Committee on Nutrition from 1994 to 2004.
