What's unique about being a nonprofit organization?
Being a nonprofit organization means that LSRO does not have stockholders or is not owned by any specific group or organization. Under the provisions of the federal tax code, LSRO is considered an educational organization, and does not have to pay corporate income tax. To maintain this privilege, LSRO must perform an educational benefit to the public. LSRO accomplishes this by selecting projects that have a general public benefit and by making public LSRO reports.
LSRO is governed by an independent Board of Directors, which makes sure LSRO provides a general public benefit and holds to its principles of providing science-based analysis and advice. LSRO conducts its studies under grants and contracts that are paid for by our clients. Being a nonprofit does not mean that LSRO does not charge for its services. But because LSRO is a nonprofit organization we can offer our services at the lowest possible cost to our clients.
