What are the functions of expert panels?
Expert panels serve different roles depending on the type of study. They range from peer review, in which they independently review a research protocol or authoritative report to comprehensive studies, where they play a role in almost all aspects of the study. In comprehensive studies expert panels help identify what information should be evaluated, what types of expertise are needed to evaluate the information, evaluate the information, develop the report findings and conclusions, and guide the writing of the report (most LSRO reports are written by LSRO staff and edited and emended in consultation with the expert panels).
