James C. Smith, Jr., Ph.D.
Dr. Smith , an authority in the area of vitamin and mineral interactions, is a Senior Scientific Consultant at the Life Sciences Research Organization. At LSRO he has participated in the preparation and editing of several reports. Dr. Smith received a B.S. in Agricultural Education and a doctorate in Nutritional Sciences/Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, and continued his work as part of a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Biological Chemistry, UCLA.
During the 36 years prior to joining LSRO, Dr. Smith was employed in federal research laboratories, including the Veterans Administration Medical system and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). He has directed research on trace metals and vitamins, as well as clinical studies on carotenoids.
Dr. Smith has published over 375 articles including book chapters and encyclopedia entries and has served as an editorial board member, assistant editor, and ad hoc reviewer for several national/international journals. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, and the Commissioned Officers Association, U.S. Public Health Service.
